East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when English window, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values. Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story.

It's been said that no one had a more powerful influence shaping the music of the 20th century. This performance asks what makes a teacher great? Why was Boulanger called "midwife to genius?"  How was this career possible for a woman?

Born into a family of musicians, Boulanger found her passion not in the composition genius of her sister and father or the voice of her mother, but in the vocation of teaching. Throughout her life, she taught at the Paris Conservatoire and in America; served as a music editor, critic and organist; organized war relief with her sister Lili; and was the first female conductor of several American and British orchestras.

The Bakken Trio is collaborating with playwright Mina Fisher and singer/actress Christina Baldwin to present NADIA, a one-woman tour de force about the legendary musician Nadia Boulanger in which Nadia’s memories are triggered by chamber music.
